How the southeast LA climate works on a Bell roof
People assume a mild Los Angeles climate is easy on a roof. It is not, it is just hard in a quieter way. The dominant force in Bell is the sun. Day after day of strong, direct ultraviolet and weeks of triple-digit inland heat bake the oils out of asphalt shingles, dry and crack the rubber boots around the vents, and turn the felt underlayment beneath a tile roof brittle long before the tile itself looks tired. A roof here rarely dies in a single dramatic event. It dies slowly, cooked from above season after season until the day a rain finally finds the path the heat opened up.
Then there is the rain, which matters precisely because there is so little of it. Bell can go most of the year bone dry, and when the rain does arrive it tends to come in heavy, concentrated bursts during the winter atmospheric-river storms that roll in off the Pacific.
